Re-establishing and safeguarding your personal safe space requires a proactive approach and a combination of strategies. Here are some steps you can take:

1) Self-awareness: Being self-aware of one’s needs, boundaries and what makes an individual feel safe and secure is the first step towards creating a personal safe space. Having an understanding towards one’s own interests, values and what brings them joy or relief leads to the creation of a personal safe space an individual longs for. Understanding oneself better aids in re-establishing a personal safe space based on individual’s needs.

2) Set boundaries: Setting boundaries in relationships is essential to protect one’s personal safe space. Individuals who clearly communicate their expectations, concerns and share what they are comfortable with in terms of interactions and conversations have a personal safe space filled with a sense of respect, security and self-esteem.
3) Surround yourself with supportive people: Individuals should pursue relationships and connections where they feel respected and supported. Social connections where others understand and value the need for a safe personal space creates a nurturing environment where individuals feel safe enough to express themselves freely.

A therapist can address past traumas, emotional challenges, and self-limiting beliefs that clouds an individual’s sense of safety which ultimately assists an individual to overcome the barriers towards maintaining a personal safe space.

6) Create physical and emotional boundaries: Creating physical spaces where one feels safe and comfortable such as a cozy nook, outdoor spot or a particular room filled with one’s favourite objects like that of books, paints, journal, etc. gives rise to the feeling of serenity and calm. Such physical spaces adorned with an individual’s personalised stuff can aid in his emotional healing. Furthermore, an individual can protect his emotional well-being by practicing self-kindness, countering negative thoughts, and fostering optimism.

7) Limit exposure to negativity: One should reduce the consumption of harmful media, social media platforms and involvement with toxic people that promote negativity to protect their personal safe space. While scrolling, individuals should be mindful of the information they consume to protect their sanity and prioritize positivity.
8) Engage in self-reflection and journaling: Individuals should set aside some time out of their day to engage in journaling and self-reflection. Doing such activities helps to process one’s thoughts, gain clarity and identify patterns or triggers by untangling all the emotions smoothly and allows them to explore their thoughts, emotions, and feelings in the most transparent way possible.
Remember, re-establishing and safeguarding your personal safe space is an ongoing process. It requires self-awareness, self-care, and setting boundaries. Be patient with yourself and give yourself permission to prioritize your well-being.
